Clara Urbahn has lived on Nantucket for about 50 years. She is a "local legend" in so many ways. Clara has been a book illustrator and author, an artist and creator and a friend to everyone she meets.
Her illustrations are magic and amazingly detailed. Her puppetry is full of whimsy and her "Critters" as she likes to call them, are joyful and can make anyone smile. She also has an amazing hand at painting. Clara's oils are in the same vein as her illustrations, puppets and critters. They are mysterious and tell a story that draws the viewer in.
Clara is full of joy and wonder and enjoys sharing that with her audience and friends. She is a huge patron of the arts on island and her work can mostly be seen at The Artists' Association of Nantucket and Robert Foster Fine Art - Nantucket.
Her work is in many collections around the world, libraries and museums. You may have seen one in person at The Nantucket Aetheneum in The Children's Section of the Library. There, kids can read a book and be comforted by one of her Animal Chairs while reading.
